Leona Lewis won the third series of X Factor UK in 2006 on 16 December, with Quinn finishing as runner-up. 12.6 million people tuned in to the final and saw Leona being crowned as winner. An incredible 8 million votes were cast, with Leona Lewis receiving 60%. Leona performed her winner’s single A Moment Like This (Kelly Clarkson) and became the Christmas number one. It was reported that 1 million copies of the winner’s single were pre-ordered by stores and that it was downloaded 50,000 times within 30 minutes of being available online. It became UK’s second best selling single of the year. According to the Official Charts Company, the song has sold 895,000 copies in the United Kingdom as of December 2012. As of today, it has sold 900,000+ copies.
Soon after the show Leona Lewis emerged as the most successful contestant to appear on the X Factor having sold over 30 million records worldwide as well as being the only former contestant to be nominated for a Grammy.
It all began in London in front of the four judges. Leona Lewis chose to sing Somewhere Over The Rainbow.
The judges were amazed and she got through bootcamp where she sang Without You and You Light Up My Life
Her first live performance on the X Factor was a cover of Michael Jackson’s I’ll Be There which guaranteed her a pass to week 2.
Songs by Rod Stewart was the theme of week 2. Leona chose to sing The First Cut Is The Deepest.
For the first time this season the contestants were joined by a live band. Leona Lewis sang Summertime and got the whole country behind her.
Leona chose to sing Chiquitita in week 4 as theme song.
The theme song for week 5 was Love Songs so Leona decided to sing Elton John’s Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word.
In week 6 Leona was joined by a big choir while singing Bridge Over Troubled Water.
After hearing comments that she’s always singing the ballads, she decided to go for her first uptempo song, Lady Marmelade. It showed everyone Leona was more than a ballad singer. For her second song, she chose to sing I Will Always Love You from the Bodyguard.
Could It Be Magic was Leona’s first song in week 8 as theme song. For her second song the contestants were free to choice. As Leona is a big Mariah Carey fan, she picked Without You.
Only a couple of weeks left until the big final but Leona was sailing through the competition with ease. Also this week the contestants were free to pick their two songs. As a huge Whitney Houston fan she chose I Have Nothing followed by Over The Rainbow which she sang at her audition.
Leona Lewis finally made it to the final. With four songs to sing, she started with I Will Always Love You (favourite performance of the series). Her second song A Million Love Songs was a duet with Take That. She chose All By Myself as her last song followed by a performance of her winner single A Moment Like this, which is originally sung by Kelly Clarkson.
